Paver Patios & Walkways in Huntsville
Paver work built on a proper base so it stays flat instead of settling and rocking.
Most failed paver patios failed underneath. North Alabama clay holds water and moves with it, so a patio set on a few inches of loose gravel will settle, rock and open at the joints within a few seasons regardless of how good the pavers themselves are.
Doing it properly means excavating to depth, installing and compacting crushed stone in lifts, using geotextile fabric over clay subgrade, and compacting polymeric sand into the joints. It is the least visible part of the job and the entire reason the finished surface stays flat.
Grade should be planned before excavation begins. Water needs to move away from the house at a consistent fall, which on a flat lot means deciding in advance where it goes instead — a drain, a dry creek, or a planted low area that can absorb it.
